Needle In The Groove’s Top 10 Albums of 2021

My top 10 albums of 2021.

Well grapple fans (an up to date reference for the kids!), here we are at the dying embers of 2021 and thinking at the same time last year we were all predicting we would all be back to normal, everyone fully vaccinated and living like to the full. Well thanks to Covid-19 mutating like, well Covid-19, here we are a year down the line, all pretty much locked up as we were last Christmas. Gigs opened up for a couple of months and I snuck in 3 before the UK government made it pretty much impossible to go see a gig from Boxing Day onwards.

Thankfully bands didn’t let this affect them and it was a very strong year for releases. Most of the bands on this list were albums purchased in 2021, so there will not be a review on the site for further details. Where there is a review I will attach a link. It’s far from me to criticise, so if you have brought an album out in 2021, well done to you all.

It was also good to hear only yesterday that vinyl sales were up in the UK, with them making up 23% of all sales, which is 14 years of continuous growth, and CDs seeing the lowest number of sales since 1984, just one year after they were introduced to the UK. This increase is probably down to two factors – Adele and Abba. I don’t think my haul of over 200 albums bought in 2021 made a dent in the numbers.

I’m sure vinyl sales would be a lot higher were it not for manufacturing issues, PVC shortages and the fact that demand is outstripping supply by 2:1. If you have a spare couple of million lying down the back of the sofa, build a vinyl pressing plant. You can’t fail. For some reason, probably because they were part of a ‘bundle’, over 190,000 tapes were sold in 2021, their biggest selling year since 2003. When compared to the streaming monsters however, its bugger all as the likes of Spotify, Amazon, Deezer etc etc had an 81% share of the market.

Anyway onto my top 10 albums of 2021……

10. Lifesigns – Altitude

I was new to the Lifesigns party in 2021 but even from the first listen I was hooked. Its a really great album, and John Young is now a firmly established name in the Chesworth household.

9. The Dead Daisies – Holy Ground

The Dead Daisies were good, then they became excellent. Why? Well Glenn bloody Hughes only went and joined them. The ‘voice of rock’ added his Glenn Hughes-ness to TDD and the result is the fab. The man is the Tinkerbell of rock, adding a drop of fairydust to take TDD up a notch above anything they had done before this point

8. Thunder – All the Right Noises

Considering I was at their last ever gig a few years back, Thunder’s return and resurgence has been a great one, with ATRN sitting nicely near the summit of Thunders best works. It’s that good.

7. Dirty Honey – ST

Dirty Honey hit the ground running with their cracking EP. Their debut album picks up where the EP left off. Self produced and financed, they want to take care of their own destiny. In Mark LaBelle they have a singer who can challenge some of the greats. 70s rock is alive and well. (Fun fact – their single from the EP ‘When. I’m Gone’ was the first ever single from an unsigned band to top the Billboard Rock Chart). My only gripe is the album is too short! I’ve had longer shits.

6. The Night Flight Orchestra – Aeromantic II

If your idea of melodic rock heaven is parpy keyboards and songs that sound like they were written and performed in the 1980s, then look no further. TNFO make every song sound like it was written for the Rocky film franchise and 80s B movies when the likes of Paul Sabu, Lion and Stan Bush were regular contributors.

5. Myles Kennedy – The Ides Of March

This is the album I waited 11 years for. Myles’s debut was good and all, but with TIOM he came out of the blocks like a stabbed rat. More power and welly, and in the title track, he has a song that is a close second to ABs Blackbird. ‘The Ides Of March’ track is completely all over the place. No wonder he hardly plays it live, but when he does…..its a thing to behold.

4. Leprous – Aphelion

Leprous is another bands that I came to the party late with. Having heard ‘Pitfalls’ first, I was smitten. With ‘Aphelion’, the feeling was identical. I can see why fans are not too hot when comparing the 5 albums before ‘Pitfalls’ to the latter two new ones, but for me ‘Aphelion’ is a brilliant album. OK its all about Einar Solberg and he clearly holds the keys to the castle, but the performances of all the guys is something to behold. They are brilliant, and they bloody well know it.

3. Plush – ST

I’ve been a fan of Moriah Formica’s ever since she appeared on a Michael Sweet album back in 2016. She is a very talented singer/songwriter and when someone of her age can tackle Ann Wilson songs with ease, you know they are special. She is surrounded with some amazing talent in Plush – Brook Colucci, Ashley Suppa, and Bella Perron. Considering they were all under 21 when the album dropped in October, the results are stunning. A band so young shouldn’t be this good with their first album.

2. Iron Maiden – Senjutsu

OK its another dinosaur of a band up at the sharp end of the poll for the second year running. After a 6 year gap Iron Maiden didn’t need to ever make an album again. But they did, and its a belter. OK, its no ‘Powerslave’ or ‘Piece Of Mind’. Its about as diverse as Steve Harris and Iron Maiden get, and that is a good thing indeed

  1. Nestor – Kids In A Ghost Town

This album simply ticked all the boxes for me – great gongs, great vocals, set in the 80s and some of the best videos this side of Van Halen and David Lee Roth. A lot of bands try to recreate the 80s heydays but few succeed. Lets face it, some of the lyrics are corny, but they are delivered in a style and knowing nod to the past that you are just swept along for the ride. The sign of a good album is one you can’t stop playing, and with KIAGT its hardly been off rotation. They even roped in Sam Fox for the best ballad I’ve heard in a number of years, ’Tomorrow’. I can’t wait for album No.2

The Blood Republic – ‘Unbound’ Video

The brainchild of Zak Muller, The Blood Republic return with a killer video, Unbound.

After supporting Iron Maiden, touring Europe, and selling out venues across the UK with his previous band Wild Lies, Zak Müller begins a fresh venture with his new band The Blood Republic.

Offering a bold re-imagining of the grunge genre, The Blood Republic was launched in September 2018 with debut single ‘Ditch’ which generated the band over 11,000 followers over their social media platforms in just two months. Since then, the band has been relentlessly releasing great music which has been pulling them in a loyal fanbase of daily listeners along with features on Planet Rock, Total Rock, Maximum Volume, Rock N’ Load Mag, Indie Buddie, Vents Magazine and many other influential blogs, magazines and radio stations.

Multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and music producer Zak Müller is the front-man and mastermind behind the project. Everything from the music down to the artwork and videos is visualised and created by Zak, making The Blood Republic an advanced artistic endeavour.

Unbound has a quality video which is a rarity these days. Its a neon affair pulling in the likes on Tron as an influence. The best I can describe Zak Müller and The Blood Republic is if Alter Bridge and Alice In Chains had an affair then the bastard offspring is Zak. He has a voice that melds Tremonti, Cantrell, Staley and to some extent Kennedy (but the lower register of Kennedy). The production is spot on, and sounds absolutely fab. I look forward to hearing much more from the talented Mr Müller as he definitely has something going on.

‘Unbound’ is the latest single from British rock band The Blood Republic. It’s their first single to be released from their 2nd studio album that was written and recorded during the pandemic. ‘Unbound’ will be available March 19th On Spotify with the accompanying music video released on March 26th.

McStine & Minnemann release 1st single ‘PROGRAM’

MCSTINE & MINNEMANN

“PROGRAM” – THE FIRST SINGLE FROM THEIR DEBUT ALBUM – VIDEO NOW ONLINE

PRE-ORDERS AVAILABLE NOW – OFFICIAL ALBUM RELEASE ON JULY 3RD 2020

McStine & Minnemann is a new band consisting of Randy McStine (Lo-Fi Resistance) and Marco Minnemann (The Aristocrats). Pre-orders for their debut album began on Friday May 1st, along with the release of their first single “Program” and its brand new music video.

The duo initially met in 2018 while working with other artists, but as they discovered their shared passion for an assortment of Rock, Pop, and Punk artists, they decided to embark on a collaborative project together. Although McStine and Minnemann initially set out to record an EP, they quickly shifted to making an album as their musical ideas and chemistry flourished.

The result of their self-titled debut, McStine & Minnemann, is a high-energy collection of ten compact, yet expansive Rock songs that sit well next to the likes of XTC, Mr. Bungle, The Knack, Queen, and Frank Zappa. As both men are prolific multi-instrumentalists and writers, they have created a space for each other to showcase their incomparable instrumental talents, while infusing them with an incredible mix of melodic and lyrical depth.

 WATCH THE “PROGRAM” VIDEO HERE

The first single from the album “Program” explores the impact of technology in the modern world, and the duo worked closely with videographer Christian Rios (who has also directed videos for Flying Colors and Sons of Apollo) to create an unique music video to represent the concept. Randy remembers: “I sent the song to Christian to gauge his interest in doing a music video for it, and he came back with a concept to have the whole thing feel as if our phones are communicating and directing us. The lyrics are somewhat abstract, but he picked up on a theme of tech addiction, which is something I think about often.”

“I first recorded ‘Program’ in 2013 but only started playing it again with my trio about a year ago” continues Randy. “And I thought this would be really great to do [with Marco] if we kick up the energy a bit and take it to a Devo-esque sound. I’m super excited about how it came out! The way Marco approached the instrumental section completely took it to a new level, making it very tight and rhythmic.”

Marco adds: “The whole track has a real driving energy to it and I think, as an album opener, it sets the stage for most of the musical elements that are to follow.”

McStine & Minnemann was produced by the duo, and mixed by Forrester Savell (Karnivool, SikTh).

FM to re-record iconic album Indiscreet!

30 years on we are happy to announce that we have decided to record a modern-day version of our classic debut album INDISCREET. We have been asked many times if we would consider re-recording some of these tracks using today’s modern technology and recording techniques and giving the songs the sound of FM as it is today. We realise what an iconic album this is to so many fans so we have always steered clear of tampering with it too much but whilst in the studio recording the follow-up to HEROES & VILLAINS one night at the end of a session we decided to put down a backing track to “That Girl” to see how it would sound with the huge sounds we were getting at the time. It gave the song a new dynamic and power that we couldn’t achieve in the 80s. We played it back the following morning and decided it would be great to hear all these classic songs with this new lease of life. We are not trying to recreate the original but this is our interpretation played by FM as we are today with the sound of FM 2016. In addition to the re-recording of the original album, INDISCREET 30 also features seven bonus tracks including brand new song “Running On Empty” and a new recording of “Let Love Be The Leader”.

INDISCREET 30 was produced by FM, recorded at Tremolo Studios and Coal House Studios, Staffordshire and mixed by Jeff Knowler (METROPOLIS, ROCKVILLE and HEROES & VILLAINS).

Hornet – NEW EP due to drop in November

HORNET have announced that they will be releasing a brand new EP,the follow up to their debut album ‘Skies Are Falling’, alongside a modern sound and look.  The first single ‘Cry Wolf’, from their as-yet-untitled EP will be dropping on November 25th with a dramatic music video. Phil Kinman (Tank, New Device) returns to produce the record along with Dick Beetham (Enter Shikari, Young Guns) mastering.

Frontman, Joe Thompson explains With the new EP we really wanted to just expand the sound we already had by incorporating more of our influences to make our sound more modern and diverse, something in the now, you know? The same can be said for our image. It’s definitely more relatable to us as individuals. It’s still Hornet through and through but as we’ve found ourselves developing both as a band and as musicians it has really shone through in our new songs. It’s modern but still hard, heavy and in your face!”
The band will be building up to the release with exclusive behind the scenes videos, photos and more, so be sure to follow the band

Room Experience – Press Release

Press RELEASE – ROOM EXPERIENCE: First official trailer and singer announcement
Room Experience is the name of a brand new high profile project, born from the artistic partnership between keyboardist and songwriter Gianluca Firmo (from Brescia, Italy) and the production team composed by Davide “Dave Rox” Barbieri (Wheels Of Fire, Charming Grace) and Pierpaolo “Zorro11” Monti (Shining Line, Charming Grace, Lionville).
The debut album is currently being recorded in Italy under the production’s oversight of duo Barbieri/Monti, while mix and mastering duties will be handled by star producer of the moment, Alessandro Del Vecchio (Hardline, Edge Of Forever, Rated X, Shining Line), at his Ivorytears Music Studio in Somma Lombardo (Va, Italy).
Firmo’s songwriting skills are going to offer an exciting journey through a wide range of melodic rock styles, with influences coming from classic AOR to more up-to-date melodic hard-rock. With such a rich variety of styles to face, a powerhouse and versatile vocalist was needed in order to carry songs to completion, so UK’s extraordinary singer David Readman (Pink Cream 69, Voodoo Circle) was officially approached to perform all the songs of the project.
The album is scheduled for a release in early 2015 on label tba. Further details regarding additional guests involved and more infos about the project will follow in the next weeks.

Alter Bridge UK Tour announced

ALTER BRIDGE RETURN TO THE UK FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2011

BAND ANNOUNCE ARENA TOUR IN OCTOBER WITH SPECIAL GUESTS SHINEDOWN AND HALESTORM

ALTER BRIDGE are thrilled to announce they will be returning to the UK for a six-date arena tour this October. The upcoming tour marks the band’s first time back in the UK since November 2011. In the interim, guitarist Mark Tremonti released his debut solo record All I Was, singer/guitarist Myles Kennedy returned fronting Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators, and drummer Scott Phillips teamed up with friends in Sevendust to form Projected.  ALTER BRIDGE toured extensively in support of their last album ABIII, released in 2010.  That tour was immortalized in the band’s now legendary sold-out performance at London’s Wembley Arena in November 2011 and released as the Alter Bridge: Live At Wembley DVD. Currently, the band – completed by bassist Brian Marshall – are hard at work writing/recording their new album, set for release via Roadrunner Records this September.

Frontman Myles Kennedy exclaims, “Thrilled to be returning to the UK with SHINEDOWN and HALESTORM later this year! I’m looking forward to reconnecting with the part of the world that embraced ALTER BRIDGE from the start.”

Wed 16th Oct – NOTTINGHAM Arena
Thu 17th Oct – BIRMINGHAM NIA
Fri 18th Oct – LONDON Wembley Arena
Sun 20th Oct – CARDIFF Motorpoint Arena
Mon 21st Oct – GLASGOW Hydro
Tue 22nd Oct – MANCHESTER Arena

Rounding out the bill are SHINEDOWN and recent Grammy Award winners, HALESTORM.

Hailing from Jacksonville, FL, SHINEDOWN has been touring in support of their fourth studio album, ‘Amaryllis’. Charismatic frontman Brent Smith comments: “We are truly honoured to be playing with Alter Bridge in the UK this year.  We are such big fans of the band, and admire them greatly.  Rock n’ roll is a way of life for all of us in SHINEDOWN, and we are so excited to be apart of such an amazing tour!”

Fresh off their own recent UK dates, HALESTORM already can’t wait to get back to these shores this Autumn. The are still celebrating their recent Grammy win for ‘Best Metal/Hard Rock Performance’ for single ‘Love Bites (And So Do I)’, taken from their current album ‘The Strange Case Of…’. Guitar-wielding banshee Lzzy Hale had this to say, “I’m so excited to be sharing the stage with our friends in Shinedown and Alter Bridge! I am so lucky to be the little sis of Rock on this tour. All of these men have been so influential to my life, and are tremendous performers. Anyone attending one of these shows better be prepared to leave the building barefoot, cuz the lot of us are gonna rock your socks off!”
